SACRAMENTO, Calif. - The USA Outdoor Track & Field Championships are returning to Sacramento June 22-25, 2017. The best track and field athletes in the country will compete to qualify for the IAAF World Championships next summer at Sacramento State's Hornet Stadium.
"We are thrilled to have the best track & field athletes return to Sacramento to compete in front of the best track & field fans," said Mike Sophia, Director of the Sacramento Sports Commission. "Coming off an Olympic year and heading into a world championship gives us a chance to put a big Sacramento spotlight on the sport's biggest stars."
After investing $1.2 million to resurface the track at Sacramento State's Hornet Stadium in 2014, the Sacramento Sports Commission, a division of the Sacramento Convention & Visitors Bureau, received a commitment from USA Track & Field, the sport's governing body, to bring the 2017 Outdoor Championships back to Sacramento.
"We are proud of our long history with the sport and our current partnership with USA Track & Field," said Steve Hammond, President & CEO of the Sacramento Convention & Visitors Bureau. "From the Trials, to the Junior Olympics this year, to the Outdoor Championships again in 2017, track & field continues to be big for our community."
"Sacramento has a long history of hosting premier track meets, as well as cultivating a strong track and field culture," USATF CEO Max Siegel said. "With a refurbished track, weather that is friendly to all event groups, and a first-rate LOC in the Sacramento Sports Commission, we are looking forward to an outstanding 2017 USATF Outdoor Championships."
The 2000 and 2004 U.S. Olympic Track & Field Trials at Sacramento State were the best-attended Trials in history, averaging more than 20,000 spectators over each of the 16 days of competition. The two Olympic Trials were preceded by well-attended national championship events in Sacramento in 1968, 1981 and 1995.
